Gifted and Those Who Think They Are [GATWTTA]
Last year, between Mr. and Mrs. Bennett the gifted program got off the ground. Mr. Bennett conducted a screening set of activities called Kaleidoscope,© and based on his recommendations for participants Mrs. Bennett conducted a special class for our GATWTTA students (pronounced gat'•watta). The GATWTTA students started learning the ancient Greek language. In school year 2007-08 GATWTTA students will continue to be challenged in the special Greek language class and in the regular classroom.
Kaleidoscope© screening takes place during a weekly activity designed to get students thinking about how to solve a problem. Even so, GATWTTA students are self-selected to a point. After they qualify in Kaleidoscope© they are referred by their teacher for the GATWTTA program, a study of problems, issues, and, a Bennett Academy, the ancient language of Greek.
The program adds depth to our curricular content. It helps us teach subjects such as history and science and literature in a rich and ongoing manner, rather than focusing all on how to pass the AIMS test, a measurement of basic skills, not necessarily a measurement of knowledge depth or of critical thinking abilities.
Our standards are not solely defined by AIMS testing. Rather, our standards are as often set by what is interesting and intellectually stimulating. That is one of the reasons why we can vow that students will get a great education at Bennett Academy. |
